It’s doable but the build system is quite complicated…
Yeah I understand. I don’t see much more that can be done with the Wii version, other than resolutions saving and a few bug fixes. I don’t think we’ll see virtual memory for larger Neo Geo roms or CPS3 etc. What we do have is awesome, but everyone always wants more!
What’s wrong with wanting more? =D But in all seriousness saving screen resolution would make the update worthwhile. Most of the things I listed can be done manually, like wiimote mapping. <- the only issue with that is you can’t toggle between controllers because your mappings will reset to default and in most cores default sucks, like in VBA Next where it’s missing L/R maps to Wiimote’s B/A but I think fixing ngp’s input should have some sort of priority.
Mednafen will be rebased once again, I’ll make sure to mention this issue. What mame drivers would you like to see? you got me curious and I was able to build a coleco only mess. I could try a mame_cps2 core I guess (I can’t build for Wii, but I kind understand how the make system works)
That’s cool. I guess as we already have a dedicated CPS2 core made from the FBA codebase there isn’t really a need for one, would a PGM core from MAME or an x68000 core from MESS be possible? Or MSX/MSX 2? I am interested in these as none of them are available in RA Wii (there is a standalone MSX emulator for Wii but it would be great to have more systems emulated through RA in my opinion).
X68000 runs very slow even on high end pcs seems too demanding for the wii. i’ll give pgm a shot.

Thanks, I would imagine PGM will have issues too, probably roms too large for the Wii’s RAM. Hope for good news though.

I mean try as in produce a PGM only build, but I can’t build for Wii nor test it… I’ll just trye to wirte the ruleset and test it on Win.
I would think classic drivers like nemesis, pacman, galaga, dkong, et al.would be the most beneficial (and most games enabled for the time spent). I don’t know if/how many of those already work in FBA, though.
I second including resolution saving. Now that we have great resolution settings via vague rant, I’d like to not have to reset the resolution every single time. I know squarepusher was skeptical because it increases potential to screw things up, but we’re big boys and girls here and, if worst comes to worst, we can just trash the configuration file.
The drivers I would love to have would be the following,
- Kaneko “AX System” games * (bonkadv)
- (some) Konami 68000 games * (bucky, moo, etc)
- Nichibutsu games * (dangar… im dying to be able to play this one on the wii. really old shooter, should run fullspeed.)
- M72 (and derivatives) * (r-type games)
- M92 * (rtypeleo)
- Taito multi-screen games * (warriorb)
- 91.9 Super World Stadium * (luckywld)
also, * Sega System 32 games * and * Sega ST-V games * would be cool, but I seriously doubt these 2 would run fullspeed on the wii.
M-92 would be great, would love to be able to play In The Hunt, Undercover Cops and Ninja Baseball Batman.
M-92 would be awesome! R-Type LEO is one of the games that really makes me miss my old first Xbox…
Yeah that would be cool! My favourite drivers I’d like to have on retroarch:
- kaneko16 * (1000 Miglia)
- m72 * (Hammerin Harry, R-Type, Dragon Breed…)
- toki * (Toki)
and also, because they are not properly emulated by FBA…
- tumplep * (Tumblepop)
- cninja * (Caveman Ninja)
- segas16b * (Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Shinobi)
I wish we see all of these in the near future
EDIT: the cninja driver also has Mutant Fighter, best wrestling arcade game ever!
Any luck compiling cores for any MAME drivers?
Nah I only have time on weekends
I apologise if this has been well documented. I did search for some kind of official documentation for the Wii version, with no luck.
I am making the transition over from Genesis Plus GX to Retroarch and so far everything has been seamless, with one exception. My MegaCD games seem to run without audio. These have been correctly formatted and named in accordance with Genesis Plus GX requirements (ISO/OGG) and assumed the Genesis Plus GX core in Retroarch would be the same.
Do I need to convert my .ogg audio files into another format? Or does Retroarch use a different naming scheme?
If it matters, I’m using Wii version 1.0.0.2 on a WiiU in vWii mode. Thanks!
I don’t know the answer to your problem; maybe RetroArch doesn’t include the Vorbis library: I believe they aim to use as few libraries as possible. You might have to just use bin/cue or something. Either way, converting from the lossy Ogg Vorbis format to anything else is going to reduce your sound quality further; you should only be converting from lossless to lossy.
That said, do you have a compelling reason why you’re using Genesis Plus GX via RetroArch, which forces you to deal with not just this issue but several others? RetroArch at present is incapable of capturing the original console’s aspect ratio, it can’t handle games which switch video modes without you micromanaging them yourself by exiting to the menu each time it happens, there’s still the mysterious problem with controls getting stuck in RA … not to mention, there’s a wealth of options on genplus-gx that simply aren’t available in the RetroArch port.
RetroArch is great at compiling all these emulators into a relatively cohesive unit and offering them on platforms where they’re not otherwise available, or are only available in inferior ports. But in the case of Genesis emulators on the Wii, you get a much fuller experience from the mainline, native-to-Wii emulator than the version adjusted to work as a RetroArch core across every supported platform. On just about any platform other than the Wii, I’d say RetroArch offers the best Genesis emulator you can find. But on the Wii, that’s just not true.
Last time I checked RA did not have support for OGG audio, the Genesis Plus GX core does have support for it but is disabled.
I’d like to see the pce_fast core also support OGG like the Virtual Console does. Perhaps someone can enlighten us and tell us whether or not libtremor will be supported for the next version.
If you want to play with audio you’ll have to get a rip with ISO/BIN and CUE without external audio, or (I think) if the external audio is WAV it should work.
EDIT: Yeah, just use the official one. It’s just plain superior.
