RetroArch Wii/Gamecube Releases (v1.0.0.2)

Yeah that’s a known issue. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next release.

Please, excuse my level of english. I’m not english native.

  1. How can i activate service mode configuration in FBA games with a Classic Controller Pro? In the Input Device configuration i can’t see any option to be mapped for configuration of arcade games.

  2. Supersonic user in GBATEMP posted a FCEUGX core for retroarch, with the option to use a ripped Virtual Console Palette. This palette it’s the best ever created for a NES emulator. But this core had a terrible bug, don’t load Savestates and can’t find disksys.rom for FCD games, no matter how you configure the System directory. Supersonic also posted a normal FCEUGX core, not for Retroarch, that works well. But i prefer the Retroarch core, thanks to the Trap Filter option it had more accurate colors in Wii Pal using a CRT television. It’s any temp fix for this FCEUGX core with Virtual Console Palette?

  3. Any link for a Wii compiled beta with Mame support?

Retroarch has many resolutions. How do I know which one is best for my crt TV?

Hej, Rex!

There is no “best” resolution for your TV. There is a proper resolution for each different platform. NES uses one. SEGA other one. PCEngine other one. NeoGeo 2 different ones. CPS1 and CPS2 other one…

Regards, C.

For NES games the best resolution is 480x224p with crop overscan activated. If you are a PAL user, with composite cable, turn on the Trap Filter. And with the modification that posted Supersonic in GBATEMP, if you select Virtual Console Palette, the result is a 100% accurate NES emulation.

For Final Burn Alpha, i use this page:

http://www.games-db.com

Search the name of the arcade game, and use the Raster resolution provided. If the horizontal value it’s inferior to the resolution options provided in Retroarch, multiply the value x2. For example, if in Wonder Boy the Raster resolution is 256x244, select in Retroarch the 512x224p option.

For SNES, select 512x224p.

For Genesis and PC Engine games, i use Genplus GX and Wiimednafen, great emulators.

It’s in the core options.

That sounds like a problem with the core. Askot just made a thread with recent builds you could try but according to him snes9x-next and fceumm still have broken savestates. From what I’ve read, version 1.0.0.5 will be for consoles, when that time comes it would be the best opportunity to report current bugs and well… ask about resolution saving. =D

Mame cannot be compiled for Wii as is, it would not fit memory. The only chance of supporting it would be to do like FBA and split it. It’s been said before that certain games would run properly so perhaps someday.

thanks everyone

If you want a single resolution that will work for many games/systems, try 1920x240, integer scaling with the aspect ratio set to 5:1 (EDIT: mine’s actually at 6:1, but I think it depends on your hardware knob settings), crop overscan off. I use this on my CGA arcade monitor and it works great for anything console-based that I’ve tried and for any horizontal, 60 hz arcade games I’ve tried. No wavy pixels.

Thanks, SuperSonic. I turn on the debug mode in the FBA Core, but i don’t know how to enter in Service Mode. In some forums i read that you must push L1+L2+R1+R2+Select+Start in Classic Controller Pro, but it don’t work for me. And in the input options, i don’t see any command mapped for enter in Service Mode.

And hunterk, 1920x240 it’s a HD progressive mode that don’ work in wiis connected via composite cable at CRT TV’s. Only 240p low res modes, and interlaced modes works fine with the Wii configured with a SD signal. Interlacing in a CRT TV it’s ugly, with a blurry and non accurate image. The best option for classic gaming it’s 240p double strikes modes in a CRT TV. CRT TV’s are cheap in the second hand market, in my city you can buy a 28" Sony Triniton for 35 euros. Nothing can be compared to the beauty of play a classic game in his original output. The HD modes, 480p, are better suited for 3D graphics. For example, i prefer play my Dreamcast with a VGA Box and 480p signals. But for games like Gunbird 2 in DC, that output 240p, the best option it’s a CRT TV placed vertically.

1920x240 works fine on CRT TVs without interlacing, but it looks like the Wii isn’t capable of outputting that high of a horizontal res. It may be able to push an internal framebuffer that high, but I don’t know that it would look any better than 720x240.

Semi-related: people have mentioned wanting direct control over the GX scaler thingie. Is there any program that already does this that we could look at for reference? EDIT: looks like mednafen does it. We’ll take a look at that.

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly do you mean by direct control?

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly do you mean by direct control?[/quote] I’ve seen it mentioned in a few threads (I think by VagueRant) about wanting to feed resolutions/ARs to the VI/GX scaler system to get certain pixel clocks, etc. That’s all I was referring to. I didn’t have anything specific in mind.

Not only Wiimednafen, the last unofficial release of Visual Boy Advance GX also use this technique to show different sizes of screen in 240p double strike modes.

This will be great for the Gambatte core in Retroarch. This core it’s the best GB/GBC emulator in wii, can use GBC original enhanced palettes in games like Metroid II. Far better that Wiimednafen o Visual Boy Advance GX.

That is what ‘set screen width’ is for. Unless you mean make it automatic depending on the game but Wiimednafen doesn’t do that, Genesis Plus GX does.

That is completely different, that version of vbagx doesn’t support 240p and has a wrong pixel aspect ratio.

VBA GX fork 2.3.1, the one posted in the Gbatemp forums some weeks ago, supports 240p non interlaced image, with scaling options that maintain the aspect ratio. With my PAL wii configured for SD display, PAL 60hz and composite cable, there is this option in the video menu for original filtering.

http://gbatemp.net/threads/new-vba-gx-f … -0.371284/

EDIT: VBA GX Fork it’s an unofficial release. I don’t remember if in the original VBA GX had this option or it’s a new addition.

I don’t see it, and libertyernie never mentioned adding it in the logs or elsewhere.

SuperSonic, The option for 240p it’s very confusing. Once you OPEN the rom, you must select Video Options. In Rendering, select “Unfiltered”. And voilá, the game shows in 240p double strike mode. If you give me your email in a PM, i send you an image capture taken with the phone, that shows the menu configured for this display, and another capture with Zelda - Link’s Awakening in 240p running in my CRT televisor. All Tantric emulators (SNES9xGX, FCEUGX, VGAGX) had this 240p output via the rendering->Unfiltered option, once the Rom it’s open. If not shows to you, it’s because you had the wii connected via component cable with 480p output. But with composite cable, wii configured in general options in 478I (PAL 60HZ), the 240p modes in Tantric emulatores, included VBAGX works like a charm.

There are mistakes in your post. -It does not matter what cable you use. -It does not matter whether you use 480i or 480p, Wii will change to 240p if needed. -The unfiltered mode in those three emus is just a scaled image with no bilinear and no deflicker. -The original mode is the one with 240p, which vbagx lacks and Tantric himself has stated he won’t add support for it. -Lastly I would not be able to tell the difference between 480i and 240p on a CRT with the quality of a phone camera or any camera really.

Wiimednafen does support 240p as an option for GBA games, perhaps you could give that a check? See if you notice a difference between this and vbagx.

Oh, in my TV i didn’t notice the difference between 240p in Wiimednafen and unfiltered in VGAGX. For example, in XBOX 1 with 2X rendering without filters in Coinops, i see the difference. But thanks for this info. One reason more to stick with SNES9X Next core in Retroarch for SNES games and FCEUGX core with your virtual console palette. Sadly, Wiimednafen doesn’t support GBC original palettes for games like Metroid II. Perhaps, in the future, the Gambatte Retroach core will support 240p resolutions in a manner like Wiimednafen. Also i’m expecting the BlueMSX core for wii. BlueMSX WII it’s a pain of emulator, with his mandatory bilinear filtering. And a Mame core for System 16 games and other for Irem Games (R-Type, Dragon Breed) will be a dream.

Is there any ETA on a release?
