Last image looks straight out of a mid 90’s gaming magazine page, nice.

Here is my CRT Philips settings, and I will update it with time, I recommend to switch SCREEN NOTIFICATIONS OFF on Retroarch, it affects the image in a way, it’s one of those “invisible layers or something” that blurs the image slightly, also leave simple preset toggle ON… I hope you enjoy it! :slightly_smiling_face:

So, as I look over this thread, these screenshots look really great. I’ve been running basic side to side scanlines for a long time and I want to get my games looking better with something more complex and realistic. Given that… 1) It seems like there are a ton of choices. 2) I don’t really know what I’m doing.

What’s a good place to start to just plug in a couple nice 80’s-ish shaders to get my games looking better, like some of these screenshots?

Thank you, these last screenshots are my last settings, and soon I will update them on this thread, just making sure everything is alright. About where to start it depends what are you looking for, but you have good different styles out there, you can start with @guest.r shaders inside retroarch, inside CRT folder :file_folder:. Also @Cyber thread also has realistic shaders with pure masks with different options, @sonkun , @kokoko3k, and @Hyllian threads. You can start with one of those until I update mine.

Thanks. Do any of these options relate specifically to an era TV… for instance which would be most suited for 80’s, and 90’s etc? I don’t know what different mask, etc options will give me realistic styles for different periods, or if it even works that way. Sorry for the basic questions… this is something I’ve ignored for a while, even though I always enjoy the screenshots. Thanks again.

My settings are based on a 90-2000’s CRT philips, so if you are looking for that, then this thread is for you

Ok… sounds good. I could use that for later systems. Does anyone making these “specialize” in an 80’s look that you know of?

Sorry, I couldn’t tell, I can’t help you in that. :worried:

Many of these consoles were enjoyed in the 80’s and 90’s so it’s possible that folks who make presets might be channelling the 80’s vibe even if they weren’t trying.

I think the best thing you can do is install all of them and try them.

I’ve got quite a number of presets packs with a lot of variety in between. Especially if you have a bright display you’ll be in for a treat but you’ll have to discuss that over at my thread.

@RetroGames4K started off with a very accurate Sanyo CRT Emulation. I wonder if that is still available.

It still available in the last update…

I appreciate that suggestion, but that’s what I’m trying not to do by getting some recommendations. I tend to go down the rabbit hole with this stuff and I have too many projects going on. :grinning:

edit RG4K, I picked up your last pack and I’m looking forward to breaking into it and trying it out.

With complementary gamma I just reverted to default gamma in and out, because after last Guest’s update my settings looked brighter, also had to made changes in colour and brightness a bit.

Updated to Guest’s advanced NTSC Version (2025-01-23-r1)

  • Reverted to default gamma in and out, because with the new complementary gamma, last settings became brighter, I will improve it in a near future.
  • Reverted to default colour and brightness.
  • Lowered vignette strength from 0.25 to 0.10
  • Raised gamma correct from 0.65 to 0.75
  • Tweaked Phase 2 & 3 colour edges a bit.
  • Raised Mask bloom and changed boost bright and dark pixels options to default.

Remember to turn screen notifications off on retroarch, as it tends to bright the image or it looks blurry.

Enjoy!

I love how it looks , screenshots makes the mask weaker than it really looks, playing looks stronger and sharper. I will update my settings later during the day, I really love this last @guest.r update .
