Yeah I understand that could be very time consuming. Better that everything is same position/size and wrap the backgrounds around that.
OTOH, this repo with artistic arcade overlays follow a pattern: https://github.com/cosmo0/retropie-overlays-arcade-artwork
And I made custom uborder presets to load them automatically based on the arcade game name. The presets can be obtained in this link: https://github.com/Hyllian/uborder/releases/download/v0.0.5/uborder_packs.zip
To get them working, follow these steps:
-
Download the overlays from the first link and unzip in this folder: Retroarch/overlays, so that the final path where the pngs are located are here: Retroarch/overlays/retropie-overlays-arcade-artwork/overlays/config/
-
The presets are inside the uborder_packs folder, which must be inside Retroarch/shaders folder.
-
Set Retroarch Aspect Ratio to Full. Enter Core Options in Quick Menu and set Vertical Mode to OFF (the preset will rotate vertical games automatically).
-
To use, load an arcade game and then load the preset ‘uborder_packs/retropie-overlays-arcade-artwork/auto-arcade-overlay-loader.slangp’.
That’s it. You can even override this preset, saving it to the Core so that it’ll load automatically when the game is launched. That’s how I use it.
thanks fella!! Much appreciated… I still haven’t had chance to get on the big tv to mess with the shield. It’s like being a kid again and having to wait till yr parents went to bed before you could set up yr console lol!
Struggling to download this: https://github.com/cosmo0/retropie-overlays-arcade-artwork
I’ll try again tomorrow
Just to be sure: Have you clicked the green button and then the ‘download ZIP’ option? It’ll get you the entire collection.
Yes m8… but it keeps getting part way through the download then stopping and saying failed. Probably something at my end.
Ok i managed to download the overlays (i think my internet was playing up). I’m using a portable version of Retroarch 1.19.1, and i’m finding that when i try to apply the shader i get a failed message. Here’s screenshots of the folder structure to make sure i’ve got it correct:
I’m using the fbneo core. Here’s the log:
[ERROR] [Vulkan]: Failed to load LUT “C:\Users\BOZ\Desktop\RetroArch 1.19.1\overlays\retropie-overlays-arcade-artwork\overlays\configs$GAME$.png”. [ERROR] [Vulkan]: Failed to create preset: “C:\Users\BOZ\Desktop\RetroArch 1.19.1\shaders\uborder_packs\retropie-overlays-arcade-artwork\auto-arcade-overlay-loader.slangp”. [ERROR] [Vulkan]: Failed to create filter chain: “C:\Users\BOZ\Desktop\RetroArch 1.19.1\shaders\uborder_packs\retropie-overlays-arcade-artwork\auto-arcade-overlay-loader.slangp”. Falling back to stock.
I think there’s a typo. The preset expects the ‘png’ inside a ‘configs’ folder and from your picture you put the png inside ‘config’ folder. You forgot the ‘s’.
Anyway, I just released uborder v0.0.7 along packs updated. I recommend you to update all.
EDIT: I’d like to apologize to you for the confusion I made. Just now I was warned that the typo was mine and not yours. In my instructions I said ‘config’ and not ‘configs’ as it should be. I’ve already fixed the instructions in the oficial thread.
Hi m8 no problem at all i should’ve noticed it myself. Great work m8!! Anyway all working now and i’m just having a play with the shader parameters…i see there’s quite a few options considering the simplicity and small amount of passes. Looking at this screenshot…is there any option to add a small black screen edge border to hide the feathered edge of the playable screen area similar to megabezel? I know i can use overscan in X and Y to remove the gap but i feel this looks a little cut off (even though its not really ).
Also is it possible to move the shine position? You can see in this screenshot it looks cut off at the top, If thats intentional then it’s not a problem i’ll turn that option off.
Thanks for your work fella
Can you pass me or say where you got that overlay? Those bezels are from the overlay or from uborder? The ones in gdrive you passed me don’t have bezels. This one is from that pack?
The shine dark horizontal bar above is intentional to simulate a shadow. Moving shine spot and turning that shadow off is doable. I’ll see in a future update. For now those are hard coded inside the shader.
Ok nps yeah that’s one of the modded overlays in that gdrive link. I’ve just dropped the rgb values of the frame to 35 which looks nice also
I guess it’s a bug. I’ll investigate why those transparencies arise in this case. Thanks for the info.
Ok I’ll turn the shine off then and overscan the playable area. I might also run the overlay through tiny in prep for using it all on the shield.
I’ve already found the bug culprit.
I’ll do some tests to see if fixing it affects other areas.
EDIT: Yes, it affects. I’ll have to work on this a bit more to workaround.
Awesome stuff m8! Appreciate your work.
I’ve been having a mess and stuck a small vignette round the edge of the screen as an alternative to a black border. It’s not perfect but i quite like the look of it
PS: Check out Fercho’s new genesis animated overlay!!!
Can you replace this shader and test if the bug is fixed?
This file: crt-nobody-bezel-reflections.slang (zipped)
I’m assuming you’re using crt-nobody in your tests.
Perfect!! Thankyou!!
I kept the vignette but reduced the strength.
The only thing i can notice now is artifacts within the reflective bezel, it doesn’t bother me at all but for the sake of testing/letting you know.
I couldn’t spot these artifacts you mentioned, can you elaborate or circle in the picture?
