Support our hardware prototype!

Dear Lakka users,

David Perrenoud and me are trying to build a very cheap console, based on the RPi Zero.

You can support us by liking our project on hackaday.io: https://hackaday.io/project/10207-gamegirl-the-retro-console-done-right

We can get some money to buy parts this way.

Thanks a lot!

Cool project!

This is a little unrelated to the project but may I ask how you’re getting the 240p video output from the raspberry pi? I tried with the composite output but it only outputs 480i. I know that using the GPIOs you can choose any HDMI mode, but can you actually get a 240p signal with the correct sync timings? Also is the framebuffer 320x240 in software or is it a higher resolution and it gets resized when outputting it?

Thanks

Yes, we use the HDMI/DPI mode which enables us to have a very fast output with no CPU usage. People usually use something like composite or SPI (PiTFT for example) because that is much easier to setup.

You can set the HDMI/DPI timings to anything you want to match your display: http://blog.reasonablycorrect.com/raw-dpi-raspberry-pi/

But you have to be careful with such a low resolution to set the pixel clock to an integer divider of 19.2 MHz: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=112735

The framebuffer can then be set to 320x240 (or 240x320 depending on the orientation of your display). I guess other resolutions would be stretched by the GPU but I haven’t tried it.

Signed up just to support you. Look forward to seeing progress.

Awesome guys totally awesome. Great work!

How much do you reckon the price of the hardware will be? (not including sd card)

I got one suggestion/ request.

The pi zero comes with an hdmi output port so I am guessing that you can also plug in the console to a tv ??

if not this would be beneficial to make the hdmi and usb ports work so you can link it to a flatscreen and have console controllers and basically, an all in one console.

very cool though keep up the good work
