Duimon - HSM Mega Bezel Graphics and Presets - Feedback and Updates

! ! Begin Big News Flash ! !

Here is a new WIP.

The Panasonic PanaColor TH18-17.

I have been planning on doing this for more than a year, and I thought it was time to start my vintage TV project.

TBH when I first got going, it felt like I had forgotten how to create graphics.

Thankfully, as the details increased, I realized what I had forgotten was how much work these projects can be.

This one presented a few challenges.

  • First off, there are very few available source images, and the one that made it famous…

…Hotel Okura’s advertisement, featuring Freddy Mercury…

…had some pre-Photoshop, darkroom magic alterations. (If you look at Freddy’s finger, next to the TV, you’ll see that the main TV has been de-saturated. (So I don’t know what color it is.)

Thankfully I found another shot.

And some good shots of it’s sister TV the TH18-C8.

Taken together I was able to move forward.

  • Second. There are a whole lot of Japanese Kanji and Katana.

With some image cleanup, some Kanji OCR, some Google Translate trial and error, and just plain stubbornness, I think I have the vast majority correct. (At least the translations make sense.)

There are a few temporary placeholders. I have a message out to @Telmo, who has been of great assistance in the past. When RL brings him back to us, I hope to correct the remaining few.

  • Finally, I wanted the TV to perfectly fill the screen.

This means that I had to fudge a few things. I tried to come to a graceful compromise but it will never be perfect.

I plan on creating a new repo to house this project. I will also be copying my TV5 and TV6 there. (With some preset name changes.

These will use a modified boilerplate that I have yet to create, (They don’t need access to all my Subclasses.) so it will be a bit before it goes live.

I did some serious on the fly OCD passes during creation, but you can expect at least one more. :innocent:

Here is a preview of the next on my list.

The SAMPO 9519.

For some reason the background image is not displayed in any preset, does anyone know what could be the cause?

It looks like it’s there but perhaps you do not have the retroarch scaling aspect ratio set to FULL as it is supposed to be

I took a deep dive into the TH18-C17.

I made the side panels smaller while maintaining their outer position and aspect ratio. (~10px narrower and ~24px shorter.)

This allowed me to correct the bezel aspect in keeping with the original. (It had been really bugging me.) It also made room for a more realistic thicker cabinet on the bottom.

Also, I had been using the dual reflection hack, and while it is cool and works, it only “just” works. I didn’t think the inner bezel and frame measured up to the rest of the graphic…

…so I created one that does.

TBH, with these vintage televisions I am most concerned with how it looks when the screen is dark. ( I want it to feel like you could reach in and touch the CRT. )

I think it looks really good. :innocent: (There is even a bezel shadow that matches the integrated tube shadow.)

And of course it looks the best when the lights are dim.

:ballot_box_with_check: One thorough OCD pass.

I think I am ready to start tweaking the boilerplate and get the new repo live.

That was it, thanks a lot

Looks like this one would be good to test a double bezel reflection when I add it. Perhaps I could do that next

Quick edit. Found this tonight while playing ColecoVision.

\res\layers\ColecoVision\bezel.params is missing the decal ref:

DecalImage = "../../../Graphics/ColecoVision/ColecoVision_Decal.png"

Good catch!

I will include the fix in my next update. :grinning:

Duimon Vintage TV Graphics and Presets

I have created a repo to house my brand new Vintage TV project.

The repo currently contains three systems.

  • His Master’s Voice Ambassador 26

  • Panasonic PanaColor TH18-C17

  • RCA GJR641PR

For those that may not know, my father was a television repairman before solid state made his skills obsolete.

I am excited to share these new creations with both him and the community.

As usual, the links to the repo and current release are in the first post.

BTW.

For those that pay attention to my GitHub history you may see some references to a “mirror_girl.png”.

It is a lighthearted replacement for the Tube Diffuse image in my realistic TV presets. (It works the best with my 3D rendered Tube Reflection image.)

If it is used with the intro enabled, the intro and game should hide it until the screen goes dark.

Just in case you think I’ve lost my sense of humor.

Awesome work m8 (my father was also a tv repairman) :beers:

I was having so much fun with the mirror_girl image that I decided to mask out the competing backgrounds and try and make her even more ghostly.

Along the way I realized that the default Diffuse image scale of 140 has been cutting off a lot of the vignette in my custom diffuse image.

I will be changing the scale to 105 and doing an update soon.

I may go in and make some changes to my diffuse image first. :innocent:

Here is a shot with an updated Diffuse image. (Less vignette on the bottom.)

I will be updating both repos when I have the time.

Did a search and found that :/shaders/ is still used at

res\layers\SEGA_Pico\monitor.params and res\layers\Nintendo_Game_Boy\Nintendo_Game_Boy_Custom.params

Thanks. :/shaders wouldn’t be a huge issue but the “Mega_Bezel_Community” path is.

I will fix both in the next update.

BTW. I did a search myself and found the same.

Thanks for the heads up!

I didn’t even know these existed until your post. And not 5 hours after seeing it, I had a facebook post come up with the exact same TV!

Yeah, it came up in a discussion of the new MojoZork core. My intent is put an Infocom logo on one small screen and use wildcards to put a box shot on the other.

I will also probably set it up for dual screen games and have a version that is customized to fit the 3DS. (We can use the full device for horizontal layout and a zoom on the smaller screens for a vertical layout.)

It should be a lot of fun!
