New CRT shader from Guest + CRT Guest Advanced updates

For consoles, we have ntsc shader to mimic the composite signal, but there isn’t a shader specific for arcade. :pensive:

I tend to be more concerned with the final image than accuracy. I just like how the NTSC brings the pixels into a more representational silhouette, and how the composite setting brings out some details that are lost with the svideo setting. It also cleans up compression artifacts in images and videos, so I like to use it with everything… period.

For arcade games, however, my first instinct for something accurate would actually be to use the normal shader. I was born in 1994 and have very few memories of arcade machines. I don’t know what sort of connection those boards had to their displays.

Yeah, arcade games are somewhat special. I think for an average home desktop user to make the best of it it’s somewhat better to use a 27’’ display, runahead and use a proper controller, also artwork is a very nice factor. Regarding shaders i think some glow, curvature, deconvergence and lighter scanlines should do pretty well. A good reference should be the mame_hlsl shader.

Featured above is preset that takes some of what @guest.r just said into consideration. I wouldn’t normally include curvature in a preset because different bezels often require different curvatures.

I don’t know if it was in the misc folder, but you get it here:

It should be placed in the misc folder though because of the dependencies.

Something is off with the glow in the NTSC version compared to the other. It would help if the glow in crt-guest-dr-venom2-ntsc was updated with the glow in crt-guest-dr-venom2.

Edit: In the NTSC preset I forgot to set “glass.slang” to linear, causing noticeable seams. This has now been corrected.

Edit 2: As of the last update, iv’e decided to reduce the glow sigma from 0.45 to 0.40. It didn’t seem like a substantial enough difference to justify a new post, especially when edits are archived.

New Release Version (6.02.2021-r1):

Notable changes:

  • vertical deconvergence added to deconvergence pass
  • hires and ntsc versions compatible with deconvergence pass now (can be added as last pass normally)
  • blur scales to absolute values, speedup with higher resolutions
  • ntsc and hires versions got separate blur passes with greater range/sigma
  • some minor parameter tweaks, cleanup

Yeah, it seems you right, but default shader parameters doesnt have a glow effect and I world like to know scanlines and crt mask settings.

It was an early test setup on the image, but you can use mask 3 and play a bit with the “CRT Mask Strength Bright Pixels” and “CRT Mask Strength Dark Pixels” parameters to achive a similar look.

For glow effect just increase the “Base Glow” value and decrease “Bloom”, since it wasn’t on the image.

Default scanlines should do, but you can try between scanline types 1 or 2.

My CM8833 went pop a few months ago (likely LOPT failure) and I’m interested to know what shader/settings you might recommend for something that would broadly look like it’s awesome Scart RGB connection?

Although I’ve been using EMU’s for about 20 years I’m almost completely green when it comes to shaders, so I’d be really grateful to have some advice.

Hey there!

You should preferably use a crt shader. :wink: The presets which end with ‘ntsc’ more or less mean a composite connection type emulation, but you can change this to Svideo.

For start you should use a crt shader which supports curvature or maybe a corner function. If you are new with shaders then it might be a longer but interesting road to use a bezel for your preferred crt look, but you can move in this direction too.

Since i’m not familiar with you exact tv model i can more or less advice to set the scanlines to your preference and set the filtering. It should be simple enough to set this in crt-guest-dr-venom after a couple of minutes. For a more advanced mask setup you should try crt-royale though and invest some time in it also.

Apologies, I should of mentioned that I noticed two screen shots of my monitor posted earlier in this thread and presumed you had access to one. It’s a 14" 640x256 (medium res?) monitor with an RGB Scart input. I’ve been experimenting with your “fastest” version and currently have have it set to defaults other than changing to the first Lottes mask and altering the curvature to more closely match “Lottes-fast” which I found to be too blurry. I have played with CRT- Royale but found it too blurry for my taste (perhaps because I’m using 1080p) and vastly prefer your shaders.

Another thing I’m curious about, does anyone here use ClickMonitorDDC? It’s a simple little program to adjust monitor settings but it also has auto-run commands so when launching an application it can auto adjust brightness etc. I was rather hoping it could auto-run when launching cores to make up for brightness lost using shaders but it only seems to work with exe’s.

Interlacing 1-3 has tons of flickering with giant blocks of rectangular color shapes artificating on the screen on any higher res game. I have a 120hz monitor and a 2060 gpu. This is was with all the venom 2 shaders. Do I have something setup wrong?

It’s sure a driver/arch discrepancy, but i don’t have the means to test it with some adapters. Can you test this version? It has some clamping to prevent NaN’s etc.

Notable changes:

  • interlacing should be fixed with some adapters (RTX 2060…).
  • internal resolution options added to the standard gdv version.
  • some minor fixes
  • Edit: Down sampling added to standard version, looks very nice with high-res content.
  • Edit2: New naming scheme introduced
