Sony Megatron Colour Video Monitor

So what is the difference between all the different presets?

This is all a bit odd - I did see the exact problem @GPDP1 just posted and I’m thinking this may be what you’re seeing. However I tried reproing it after it went away and haven’t been able to. For test purposes I’d fake 4k by using a custom aspect ratio - I’ve been doing that for 8K myself - I just sit back a bit.

So that’s a question - the short answer is each preset represents a different CRT make and model as they all look quite different.

Then for each of those there’s a SDR option and a HDR option. HDR is generally brighter but you need a display that is capable of HDR.

Just did a fresh install, everything from scratch, updated everything, and I still get the issue. It definitely wasn’t doing this before. Version 2.7 was working A-OK as far as I could tell. And just so we’re clear, I don’t have any HDR capabilities on this machine whatsoever, neither on my GPU or my monitor.

Are there any you would recommend in particular?

Thanks for trying that. So my laptop does have a wierd HDR mode in that it can playback streamed HDR content but it doesn’t allow me to have a HDR desktop or play games in HDR. My monitor does have HDR mode but it only goes up to 270nits so its not really HDR. Not sure why I’m saying this but I think my issue was due to wrong monitor settings.

However I barely use this setup so I can’t really be sure of anything other than the problems I saw were identical to yours and I think happened in version 2.7 of the Sony Megatron. I’ve got to go to sleep now but I’ll try and investigate this more tomorrow.

Yes definitely start with the 2730QM HDR first as it’s the one that got me into this mess! It’s the one that I have the PVMs physically in my house that I’ve been able to closely control all the settings for the photos and comparisons for.

@Nesguy and @GPDP1 can you let me know what RA video driver you are using? My best guess at the moment is that this is driver specific. I’ve also noticed RetroArch being unstable for me now as in it pops up and dies and I need to restart my laptop to get it working again - I suspect this is related.

Re-uploaded Super Mario World side-by-side as it got stuck encoding the high res versions:

As always best view in fullscreen at 4K quality playback.

Not to be nitpicky but can we get another video like this please? Probably start with and keep the camera landscape. You can still capture both the laptop and CRT and you can still zoom in on them individually.

They’re just videos to check the colour - we’re not getting into details here. It should serve fine for that purpose as Nesguy has already confirmed - I did two videos because we had two places where we had confirmed issues. But yes in the future I’ll try to keep the camera in one orientation.

I was just thinking of being able to use them as comparison videos for when I recommend the shader to people who don’t have a clue that stuff like this exists.

Do you have any high quality ones that you could recommend to me?

I haven’t done much testing as been busy with MiSTer/PVM. I tried the Sony 1910 shader last night and the colours are much better on my OLED. Is this preset new? It would benefit from more brightness, but hopefully I’ll be getting a new oled this year, my c6 is almost 6 years old so I’ll benefit from 6 iterations of improvements

I’ve been using glcore.

Hi Cyber, I’ve set up a YouTube channel - purely to post videos here to be honest.

You can find it at this link with all the videos I’ve made so far:

When I get the time I’ll re-record the side-by-side videos in fixed orientation.

Also thank you very much for recommending it to people!

Hi Wilch, I’m not sure that preset is that old but then again this whole shader is only a few months old - I’m glad you’ve found something that works for you! Do let me know how you get on with any new TV!

It’s the same across glcore, vulkan, d3d11 and d3d12.

Thanks! Well I suppose that rules that out. I don’t think it’s to do with the shader itself as it works here (I have been wrong before though!). I’ll get to the bottom of why my Retroarch is failing on launch sometimes - I think the two issues are related.

Small update I’ve been able to setup a retroarch build environment on my laptop and have been able to repro the bug and get a PIX capture of the problem. Hopefully I’ll find the actual issue soon - my first guess is that this is due to an uninitialised variable in the shader code and so thats why it works sometimes but not others.

@Nesguy and @GPDP1 found the issue - its basically down to skipping the phosphor gamut when sRGB is used as the output colour space. Whilst I fix it properly a work around is just to use the DCI-P3 colour space. It works on my laptop display at least. As I say I’ll work on a proper fix for this as I’m clearly not doing something right in respect.
