When NTSC filter is mandatory?

It’s not an unreasonable request per se I think, we have seen there are e.g. differences between RGB output of different console models etc. It’s just that without a point of reference (like A/B comparision mentioned by hunterk) it’ll be guesswork I suppose.

Very interesting article over at the crtdatabase (Edit. For some reason, it was taken down. It’s available via Archive.org, but maybe they made a mistake with the testing?) https://web.archive.org/web/20240810020907/https://crtdatabase.com/articles/toshiba-tc90a45f ) comparing a late digital Toshiba CRT comb filter ouput versus a Retrotink Pro 2x Pro using a notch filter. Features output from 3 Genesis models, 32x and Wii (using Genesisplus GX). Check out some pics for a preview, but I recommend to read the full thing.

One result that surprised me: according to the effect table, using a crt with such a comb filter shouldn’t show blend effects as good with Genesis models as they appear with 32x or Wii.

NTSC paired with lottes is really authentic, pretty close to the real thing. I used ntsc-simple together with lottes-mini, you could trick someone he is watching a real crt on composite hah. Not so much with sharp shaders like zfast in example. At least 8bits should be played this way and to say the truch i much prefer snes/genesis/pc engine like that too. It’s pretty clear Genesis games were made with composite cables in mind.

If you got any preset to share, I’d greatly appreciate it! Really like the NTSC blurry looking.

Sure, and nothing tricky, i use this for PC Engine, you can change the system mode as you like

shaders = "6"
feedback_pass = "0"
shader0 = "shaders_glsl/stock.glsl"
scale_type_x0 = "source"
scale_x0 = "4.000000"

shader1 = "shaders_glsl/ntsc/shaders/ntsc-simple/ntsc-simple-1.glsl"

shader2 = "shaders_glsl/ntsc/shaders/ntsc-simple/ntsc-simple-2.glsl"
scale_type_x2 = "source"
scale_x2 = "0.500000"

shader3 = "shaders_glsl/ntsc/shaders/ntsc-simple/gauss_lp.glsl"

shader4 = "shaders_glsl/crt/shaders/crt-consumer/linearize.glsl"

shader5 = "shaders_glsl/crt/shaders/crt-lottes-mini.glsl"
filter_linear5 = "true"

system_choose = "2.000000"
ntsc_sharp = "0.050000"
g_in = "2.200000"

I have re-checked several times and with most updated shaders used here from repository but still can’t manage to make this preset work. Is there something missing ?

Sorry for the inconvenience

Just load ntsc-simple then append crt-lottes-fast
