4K Vertical Overlay Community Contributions

@ArsInvictus and anyone else fully tuned into these vertical overlays, what’s everyones preferences on the ideal screen size for the display on these when running them vertical? I’m shopping around for a cheap 4K TV for my bar room area where I have my gaming setup and wondering if I can fit whatever the ideal size needed is to get a vertical setup that closest matches a real cabinet size. Appreciate any tips and even recommendations on displays if you have any. I’m looking for budget model nothing high end at all here. Cheapest I can find to be honest lol. It’s Christmas time, Kids got me broke already along with the medical bills I’m racking up!

Thanks in advance…

My own preference is 55" in terms of a comfortable viewing size for the screen area. I think 50" would most closely mimic original cabinet dimensions for most classic 19" cabs, which was 24" across (some of the later cabs for 25" monitors were larger though and 55" would be a better match for those). It also depends on how far away you will be from the screen, I’m standing maybe 4 feet away from mine which is a lot farther than one would on an actual cabinet.

There are some great deals on TV’s around here these days, I saw a 98" TCL at Costco the other day for less than $1500, which is insane compared to just a few years ago! That would probably be a bit too big for these overlays

Thanks for the recommendation and details. I did end up doing some advanced searches on the forum last night and saw other posts replies from you on the topic which also helped. I’m so out of the loop on the TV tech these days. I don’t even know all the different types in these names and the pros and cons of them. :joy: Do I just get a “4K” named one and get the best bang for the buck? Or any advantage of spending up a little more on some newer type out these days? This thing would be a dual use thing… 1 for my crude arcade setup I have ontop of the bar that’s perfect height standing up for arcade style or sit down, and 2 plan on using it to stream sports games, UFC, Boxing events etc when we have people over. See if I can find a nice swivel mount with extension arms to swing it out where I need it for each use/position.

If you are able to get that swivel mount with extension, please let me know. I have the same idea. I´d like to build an vertical arcade cabinet but I do not want to “sacrifice” the TV only for vertical.

I’ve just swapped out the 4k screens in both my vertical cabs with TCL displays and they are amazing, vibrant, clear, smooth with great contrast, cheaper and IMO in some ways better than the Samsung, LG and Sony I was originally looking at for a great deal more money! These new TV brands are really decent and despite my initial concerns (being an older lifelong tech head), I’m pleased to say they really deliver. Sounds like you have a decent use for a larger screen, as @ArsInvictus said a 50" - 55" works great for authentic cab size. I have a 55" 4k TCL screen on my racing rig which has a manual 180-rotating Vesa mount that works great.

After measuring the area I’m working with 55 inch is too big so I have to roll with 50 max. I found this cheap budget 50 inch TCL on slickdeals for 50% off right now ($200) and impulse bought it last night haha. After I got confirmation texts that it would be here friday it hit me… “I should have probably used the old stud finder for the area I’m working with to see if my idea would even work with this dual setup thing.” :grimacing: Got the stud finder out at like midnight and the battery died on first push and I didnt have another battery laying around. Got one today and found a stud in what might be the perfect spot for what I need with the long extension arm wall mount I would also need.

TV from Best Buy (found on slickdeals.net)

@K-rnivoro Mounts I’ve found so far (just looking on amazon first) and particularly with longer than normal reach scenarios…

This one extends out a wopping 48" - $140

This one extends out 32.28" - $120

This one extends out to 21.45" - $113

This one extends to 20.7" - $64

This one extends to 19.5" - $45

This one has better measurements for me in full extend state at 32" - $60 but it doesn’t rotate to portrait mode for a vertical setup. But listing it incase anyone else finds it useful for a normal landscape mount. The wall base plate is also a single stud vs 2 like the other one which could be good or bad depending on the given work area you have and weight of the TV. This cheap TV only weighs 19 lbs so I wouldn’t be too worried about the single stud design. I just wish it rotated to portrait and I would buy it now!

To be honest, I’m not even too sure portrait mode for where I’m doing this ontop of the bar will work or not yet for a vertical setup. I can use some help from others for measurements here. What’s the ideal height measuring from the floor to the bottom of the TV for a 50 inch in portrait mode to use these vertical overlays? @ArsInvictus I know I’ve seen some pics of your setup before. What’s your measurements around for your setup you have?

If anyone else has links to wall mounts that extend at least 30" out from the wall and can be rotated to portrait mode, please let us know.

Thanks!!! This is very useful!!!

TCL do a really good 50" Mini-LED TV with 144Hz refresh rate (VRR) for under $1000 AUD, destroys any other brand spec-wise for the same money. Model is 50C755.

Just adding that I’m pretty happy with a 43" when standing 2.5 - 3.5ft away. And I’m using a 1080p\60hz monitor which still looks totally acceptable at that distance. I agree anywhere in 43 - 50" should be good.

@MagicHat most of the bezels hit in the middle or a little above middle of the screen. So maybe just try to get the center of the screen when vertical at about the same height as a monitor would sit in an arcade cab?

@MagicHat

I went with this mount and this TV!

This one looks amazing if you could’ve gotten your hands on one though.

Just wanted to say thanks for introducing me to yet another rabbit hole! I primarily wanted the vertical mount to just be able to enjoy vertical games using more of the screen’s real estate and that seems like a huge improvement over running them in landscape mode, however when I tried my first vertical overlay, I was completely blown away!

I really don’t know which to choose now. It definitely needs the Mega Bezel, Koko-AIO or Uborder reflective bezel treatment though.

That glow in the SF2HF Marquee was surreal!!

The buttons looked 3 dimensional, like they should be pressed!

Now I have to make a whole new vertical preset pack.

Thanks @ArsInvictus again and all others who are involved in this project!

Quick question, what’s the quickest and easiest way to get all of the available vertical overlays installed and up and running?

First be sure HSM Mega Bezel is installed, and download all the overlays and params files from @ArsInvictus.

MegaBezel are GPU intensive, even in HD. Koko-aio can be a lighter alternative, but params are not made yet for vertical, it has less options though.

UBorder is very light and fast, but lacks of bezel generation, only it´s reflection over a “real” bezel (real meaning as part as the overlay), and some overlays has no bezel.

Hey, thanks for sharing. Lol

Hey @Cyber, Glad you gave the vertical overlays a shot! Were you able to get the google drive repo set up? Here’s a link in case you need it:

Btw, not sure if you or @HyperspaceMadness have experimented with this new CRT simulation shader yet, but it does look intriguing! Apparently the slang shader is already available in the RA updates:

Yeah looks pretty interesting,

I need to do have the main shader chain running at 60Fps, then have the scan sim run at a higher refresh like 240 as the above needs, otherwise I think the Mega Bezel is going to be alternative winter heating.

By the way, I looked into it and tested it and I think I’ve got it working locally. I have the minimum of spec to run it which is 120fps, so 60fps with 2 subframes. The motion clarity is still MUCH better.

Now I’ve got to get a 240hz screen!

I have a nice 32" LG OLED gaming monitor that can do 240 at 4K and 480 at 1080. I can’t wait to try it!

Glad you found a mount that works. I have to say I’m pretty impressed with this new TCL!

Unfortunately I ended up getting the non rotating mount and sticking with landscape for this bar top setup I have. I did some more measuring in this spot for vertical layout and the TV height would have been a bit too high for the setup making the users look up a bit vs straight on in a comfortable setting. All is good though, this new TV and mounted in landscape mode will be the dedicated setup for all of @Orionsangel work. I already have a new spot picked out in a different wall in the bar room for a better vertical setup so I have that project to look forward to down the road at some point now.

Side note on my TCL in case you hit the same issue as me. I get crazy high lag with the mouse movements while connected to it. Going into settings > picture > set to Game clears it up. But here’s the oddball trick needed along with it. Even if it’s set to Game mode, if I turn the tv off and back on, the lag is back and you have to go in and change the picture settings to anything else and then back to game mode to trigger the actual game mode settings. Weird caveat and a bit annoying to do every time you power the TV on but it’s not too bad. I’m just glad it gets rid of that awful mouse lag!

Or okay. I did some extensive measuring as well before placing my mount and when rotating I have barely an inch or two above my TV stand, which is exactly what I was going for. Of course it felt a little strange at first with the TV in landscape mode now being a bit higher than before (about 13"). The bottom 3rd of the screen is just about eye level but when I stand the top is just a couple inches below eye level which makes for much better viewing angles when standing.

About a week later, everything feels quite normal. No discomfort at all and vertical mode is a joy to have available at a moment’s notice.

I’m sorry to hear that, which model did you get? I’ve never experienced this at all on mine and I’m in HDR Game Mode the vast majority of the time and in Movie mode when watching movies and other video content.

I did read about an issue concerning VRR on nVidia GPUs on RTINGS though.

Which model do you have and what firmware revision are you on? I’m on FW ver. LF1V113. I haven’t setup Google TV on mine by the way.

You can get latest firmware before it’s sent over the air by following these steps:

There’s also Beta firmware available which users have been reported have been doing some magical things to the image quality but I’m quite satisfied with my manual adjustments so far so I might hold out until the next stable version is released.

Thanks, I downloaded all of the files from that link and placed the Mega_Bezel_Packs folder in my Shaders folder but when I try to load the Multigame.slangp it fails to load.

This is what the log looks like:

As for this, I haven’t set it up properly as yet but I will soon now that I’ve finally found the elusive subframe-bfi folder. Is there anything that I’m supposed to have turned on or off in the Synchronization menu that might conflict with this?

Also, I’m not sure how useful this would be for me as I’m yet to figure out how to get my TV to work in RGB 4:4:4 mode at 120Hz. Maybe it’s because I’m using a GeForce GTX 1070 but I don’t know. At least the TV’s built in BFI seems to be working great at 60H refresh rate!

When I switch to 4K 120Hz I get maximum of 10bit bit depth using YCbCr422 Colour Format with Limited Dynamic Range.

It could be due to a limitation of the Cable Matters 8K DisplayPort 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 Adapter with 4K 120Hz / 8K 60Hz, 48 Gbps Unidirectional DisplayPort to HDMI 2.1 Cable Adapter that I’m using to get the maximum possible refresh rate and resolution out of this now old GPU.

Edit: I tested the crt-beam-simulator and I couldn’t see any difference between it being On or Off. There wasn’t even a difference in brightness so maybe I did something wrong. I tested it by prepending it to another Shader Preset.
