@Duimon Yes absolutely I actually switched off all the ‘features’ of my mobile phone’s camera and it still made a mess of it. Fundamentally the dynamic range of current cameras and displays is still woefully under what the real world provides and so some level of tone mapping will be required for years ahead - maybe always.
@DariusG I’m not sure we’re doomed though (well we’re never going to get 100% exactly the same as a CRT without using an actual CRT). If we can start doing the type of break down that say RTing’s does but geared towards CRT’s like peak scanline luminance, scanline luminance falloff etc then I think we can just plug those values into our inverse tone mapping, colour gradation and scan line curves and be done with it.
Has anybody done such a thing already?
What we can’t do is rely solely on photos for luminance.
