yea I’ve been on HDR since getting the monitor. What would be the use case for switching to SDR when talking emulation gaming?
I really can’t say because I’ve long moved on from that type of switching back and forth scenario. I run everything in HDR so I’m used to it. I’m always looking to reap the benefits of getting the maximum brightness out of my screen because it benefits any shader scenario that I encounter, not just Sony Megatron Colour Video Monitor.
Maybe someone who’s more concerned with colour accuracy and creator’s intent might prefer switching between modes which match the content. Also, in the early days of HDR on PC, there was no HDR Calibration Wizard so initial impressions of anything that was created for SDR when viewed in HDR mode might have been that things looked horrible.
Over time, this aspect of things has improved considerably however.
That’s one of the reasons why some might say that Windows 11 handles HDR better than Windows 10.
What information from this technical sheet should I consider when configuring my RetroAch?
I don’t know the details about how RetroArch’s HDR system but works, but the standard is supposed to work at absolute luminances and it’s up to the display to figure out how to map those luminances to what it’s actually capable of displaying. 1000 and 100 are the reference values but you can still have values over 1000.
Since we don’t exactly know how the displays are compensating for their limitations, using measured values isn’t too useful. I think it would be more productive to start with 100 and 1000 (because the standard dictates that those values should work for any ‘HDR’ display) and tune by eye with test images for the content you’re actually going to use as needed.
This information is not for you it’s concerning @MIKEBLK’s display. It provides RTINGS’ test results for HDR Brightness, which he can then use to help configure Peak Luminance settings for his display according to the Sony Megatron Colour Video Monitor’s setup instructions.
The best people to answer the questions of how it’s supposed to work and what’s the correct way to set things up might be @MajorPainTheCactus and @Azurfel.
We can also go with the setup instructions which have been embedded in the Shader Parameters menu.
There are many parameters which can skew the results if trying to treat the Peak and Paper White Luminance values as absolutes, for example Gamma, Scanline Dynamics, even Colour temperature settings and Phosphor choice.
I’ve always felt the instructions to be a bit vague and inadequate because it says go to RTINGS to find out your Peak Luminance but when you go to RTINGS there’s no one value called Peak Luminance. There are several values each depending on Window Size, which leaves ambiguity and things then end up being subject to the user’s interpretation.
In the past @MajorPainTheCactus has mentioned that certain parameters should be set to neutral/default before attempting to adjust things like Peak and Paper White Luminance.
As for me, I just do what works for me. I just tend to experiment and play around with the knobs until I get things the way I like.
These are some of the “test images” I use:
I think the idea behind Sony Megatron Colour Video Monitor is to harness as much brightness as possible from your display without clipping things or messing up the tonal balance and accuracy.
Peak 2% for “HDR: Display’s Peak Luminance”.
The correct “HDR: Display’s Paper White Luminance” setting is relative not only to the max brightness of your display and you target “CRT” max brightness, but also the “R/G/B Scanline Min” settings, and the “R/G/B Scanline Max” settings, and cannot be calculated based solely on display capabilities.
For example, with an aperture grille mask, if you set all the mins to 0.650000, and all the maxs to 1.000000, a paper white setting of 668 will result in an approximately 100 nits on an LG C1 set to D65. (At D93, a lower paper white of 625 is sufficient.)
Alternatively, with a slot mask, all mins set to 0.980000, and all maxs to 1.330000, a paper white of 614 results in 100 nits (610 for D93.)
@Azurfel, thank you very much for this. Even after asking these types of questions seeking this level of clarity in the past, the responses seemed a bit vague to me so like I do in many situations, I just relied on trial and error and trusted what I was seeing with my eyes.
It is long overdue but this should be added to the official documentation of Sony Megatron Colour Video Monitor in my opinion.
No pressure but don’t be too shy about adding your azurfel mod to the repository including all of these, it’s current and other recommended improvements.

Not to mention “CRT Resolution (TVL)”. That also skews brightness significantly.
By chance do you have data for Shadow (Dot) Mask? Also, can you add the “CRT Resolution (TVL)”, “Display’s resolution”, “Gamma” and “Saturation” used in your testing as those would have an effect on relative brightness as well?
I’m not sure if I asked you this before but what equipment might be good to acquire if I wanted to perform such measurements on my own?
Lastly, to stir the pot even more, the values on RTINGS might measure the actual peak Luminance of an LG WOLED display but when using Sony Megatron Colour Video Monitor or CRT-Guest-Advanced with 100% Mask Strength, the brightness assisting white subpixel isn’t used, thus limiting real-world/actual/effective Peak Luminance on such displays.
Another thing to mention is that the scale factor/window size used to render the content can also have a profound effect on effective, real-world brightness. Smaller scale factors/window sizes allow higher Peak and Paper White Luminance.
Good catch, those numbers are all for 600 TVL at 4K.
Those shouldn’t effect this actually, but 2.4 and default.
I am of the opinion that 4K is insufficient to give a good result for the Shadow Mask setting, so i haven’t measured that. (This is also why there are no Shadow Mask presets in AzMods.)
I also have no interest in the idea of using shadow/dot masks for anything other than PC88/PC98 really, since it’s needed to properly display the dithering on those platforms. Essentially everything else looks nicer with aperture grille or slot in my opinion.
Any of the X-Rite colorimeters with glass filters. Do not get anything with organic filters. The i1Display Pro or i1Display Pro Plus (or one of the OEM equivalents) would be good options.
Calibrite purchased and rebadged them a few years ago. If you want to get one of those, double check that it can still be used with open source software like HCFR first.
This doesn’t seem to have a significant effect on things from what i have seen. The “HDR: Display’s Peak Luminance” seems to primarily impact tone mapping. Setting it to 1000 may even be more correct? I need to experiment more at some point. Ultimately, so long as the peak isn’t set too low, the paper white setting seems to be what matters anyway.

I’m very interested in continuing to use the Megatron shaders. I just wish they were less dark!

Double check that you have HGIG enabled.
Full on black every other frame BFI also, unavoidably, cuts brightness in half. The 800 nit 120hz WOLED panels can reach a bit brighter than the reference CRT brightness of 100 nits with Megatron, but certainly not the 200 nits that would be required for true CRT reference brightness with full BFI. I make this compromise in a blacked out room, but it is a compromise.
It is possible the newest WOLED panels on the LG C5 and so on might have enough brightness to manage it, or at least come close, with a peak 2% of over 1200 nits, but i haven’t had the opportunity to test this, and the necessary paper white might be so close to the ceiling that the “RGB sub-pixels only” problem that @Cyber mentioned might be more of an issue.
The 100 nits CRT reference brightness is also decidedly lower than what is generally considered normal for SDR displays nowadays, so you may find that current panels just don’t have the brightness to get as bright as you would prefer with Megatron.

In my experience with my OLED E6P going over 630 Peak Luminance started causing noticeable clipping and overall harshness. For what it’s worth, that TV got an HDR Real Scene Peak Brightness score of 637 Nits by RTINGS.
This could be due to setting it higher than the display is actually capable of.
The solution to this is to manipulate the scanline Dynamics to have less black space between them but of course, this also compromises the overall look and the contrast of the preset.
You can also use higher TVL settings.
Ultimately your display just needs to have the nits to overcome the mask, scanline gaps and BFI.
Alternatively you can use CRT-Guest-Advanced or any other CRT shader in HDR mode and use mitigations to make up for the lack of native display luminance.
The brighter the display, the less reliance on accuracy compromising mitigations.
This sound like the kind of stuff @nesguy and I have been discussing over here.
The G5 might need a Subpixel swap on the CRT shader side because it’s RGBW instead of RWBG.
I’m hoping to see a tandem² OLED panel with MLA.
Or a tandem³ True RGB with MLA and no white subpixel!
In the meantime, we have some miniLED TVs that can put even the G5 to shame in the areas of CRT emulation where OLED doesn’t do as well in.
Of course on the flip side OLED still shines in the areas that miniLED doesn’t do as well in.
In my experiments, about 250 nits is the sweet spot before things start to look worse, and this doesn’t cause noticeable eye strain in any viewing environment. It’s really hard to go back to 100 nits after becoming accustomed to a brighter image. I always target 200-250 nits, now.
203 nits is the baseline HDR reference white in ST.2084 and BT.2100. Might as well aim for that since that is in your range.
But personally, i still think SDR material usually looks best at 100 nits.
Try this one with appropriate Peak and Paper White Luminance and Display’s Subpixel Layout Parameter settings for your display. It should be relatively brighter than many if not most of my other Sony Megatron Colour Video Monitor Presets.

I just need help fixing this cut-off at the bottom edge. This only happens with the shader active.
That’s because it’s a preset meant for Turbo-Duo/PC-Engine games. It has built-in crop settings for that console. I don’t mind continuing this line of presets to cover other consoles.
So you can look out for Sega Genesis, NES, SNES, PSX and arcade presets in the near future. I’ll just evolve them from my current best or latest efforts which I tend to use for each console.
In the meantime, if you want to use that preset for Genesis/Megadrive, you’d probably want to set the NTSC Phase Mode to Auto, NTSC Resolution Scale to 1.0 and enable Genesis/Megadrive Luma/Brightness Fixes and the Megadrive Palette in addition to resetting any crop settings to defaults.
